The sources from which the names in Part I, have been derived are :—
1st. A list made during a residence of five years in the Northern Circàrs.
2d. A list prepared by Lieut. Beddome, Assistant Conservator of Forests, principally in the upper valley of the Godavery.
3d. Names found in Roxburgh's Flora Indica and Coromandel Plants.
4th. Names occurring in Heyue's Tracts on India.
■5th. Names found in Piddington's Index of the Plants of India.*
6th. Names met with in Ainslie's Materia Medica,
Part II. has been drawn entirely from a native work in M.S. called the Sabddrtha-kalpataru, a Sancrit and Telugu Dictionary compiled by Mámidi "Venkayya, a learned Komati of Masulipatam, in the early part of the present century. It consists of three large folio volumes and was found in the possession of the author's grandson, the lateMámidi Níígabhúshanam, who kindly permitted me to consult it during my residence at Masulipatam in 1851.
The following letters prefixed to a name indicate the authority on which it is inserted :—■

S. K.—The Sabdártha-kalpataru.
Br.—Brown's Dictionary.
The letter S. following a word intimates that it is of Sanscrit origin.
Those without prefix, are from my own list and when it includes names also occurring in other works, the absence of the letter indicates that they have been noted independently of such authorities.
- The number of Telugu names in Piddington's list is 928, of which 445 are taken from the Flora Indica leaving 343 derived from other sources, but many both of the former and of the latter are wholly unrecognisable:
