The first column contains the name in the vernacular character—the second its equivalent in Roman letters according to Sir W. Jones' principles as modified by Wilson and the latest authorities—the third gives the botanical names, and the fourth is devoted to miscellaneous remarks.

The botanical nomenclature has been chiefly, though not altogether based on Voigt's Hortus Suburbanus Calcuttensis, with the addition of references to the most accessible local authorities, indicated by the following abbreviations :—

Л,—Roxburgh's Flora Tndica, 3 vols. 8vo. Serampore, 1832 ; with the volume in Roman and page in Arabic numbers.

дш Cor.—Roxburgh's Coromandel Plants, London. 1795-98-1819; with the number of the plate only.

W. A.—Wight and Arnott's Prodromus Florae Peninsulae Indise orientalis—London. 1834 ; the reference being invariably to the immber of the species.

W. III.—Wight's Illustrations of Indian Botany, 2 vols. 4to. Madras 1840-50 ; the reference being, unless otherwise specified, to the No. of the plate.

W. Ic.—Wight's Icones Plantarum Iodise orientalis, 6 vols. 4to, Madras. 1840-1853. The reference is always to the No. of the Plate.

W. Contr.—Wight's Contributions to the Botany of India—London 1834; the reference is to the page.

Heyne.—Heyne's Tracts on India, 4to. London, 1814—the reference being to the page.

ffSh.—O'Shaughnessy's Bengal Dispensary, Calcutta. 1844; the reference is to the page.

Jxnt.—Ainslie's Materia Medica of Hindustan, 4to. Madras. 1818—the reference is to the page.

Bkeede.—ШЪе Hortus Malabaricus—the reference being to the pari or vol. in Roman and to the piale in Arabic numerals.
