are frequeutly ignorant illiterate men, whose faulty enunciation of a name produces a sound very different from that of the same • word correctly spoken. This is particularly the case with the wild races inhabiting jungle and forest tracts, such as the Yánádís of Nellore, the Okenchus of Guntoor, the Kóyas of Rajahmundry and the Konda Doralu of Vizagapatam. These classes possess a very extensive and accurate knowledge of the vegetable products of their several ranges and are generally able to apply a name to every plant or tree, in any wise remarkable. But as a matter of course, their pronunciation is rude and barbarous and frequently much corrupted. The particular term employed by one tribe, is likewise often peculiar to themselves and differs from that in use among the others. Still wherever such a name is found to prevail throughout a particular tract, a knowledge of it will prove useful.

In preparing the list which serves as the foundation of the present catalogue, the vernacular names were always written down in the native character, from the mouths of the speakers, by a native of the district. These have been tested by a reference to the best native dictionaries and corrected where possible. The same process lias been applied to Roxburgh's and other names introduced. But many are without doubt still faulty, several may probably be found to be insufficiently established and many more remain to be added. On several occasions, names were given to unknown plants, the botanical position of which was never ascertained and consequently this want remains still to be supplied. The list admits of being greatly enlarged, for neither leisure nor opportunity have been sufficiently at command, to allow of a systematic collection being made.

It is hoped however that by the plan now followed, a beginning has been made for the preparation of a more accurate catalogue, on correct principles, and as such, it is offered to those who are interested in the scientific or economical study of vegetable productions.

The catalogue consists of two parts :—

I. A list of Telngu names.

II. A list of Sanscrit names with their Telugu equivalents.
