బ.

1583. బంగారపు కత్తి.

A golden knife.

Said of something of intrinsic value but of no utility.

1584. బంగారపు పిచ్చుక.

A golden sparrow.

The Telugu term for the grossbeak ( Loxia Philippine ).

Pretty to look at but of no use.

1585. బంగారు పొల్లు వున్నదిగాని మనిషి పొల్లు లేదు.

There is dross in gold, but there is no defect in man.

1586. బండి దొంగరికము.

Stealing a cart.

Open robbery.

1587. బందేడు పచ్చీ కోడలి కొత్తా లేదు.

There is no greenness in Bandédu, nor newness in a daughter-in-law.

Bandedu is the Dodonaes Burmanniana, a light wood that ignites like touch-wood.

1588. బగబగమను వాని పంచనుండ వచ్చునుగాని, నాలిముచ్చు నట్టింట నుండరాదు.

You may live in the verandah of a hot-tempered man’s house but you should not dwell in the middle of the house of a man who conceals his resentment.

1589. బట్ట తలలకూ మోకాళ్లకూ ముడివేసినట్టు.

Like tying bald heads and knees in a knot.

Said of a very cunning person.

1590. బట్టప్పు పొట్టప్పు నిలవదు.

Debts for food and clothing do not remain long unpaid.

1591. బడాయి బారెడు, పొగచుట్ట మూరెడు.

His arrogance is two yards long and his cheroot a cubit long.

1592. బడాయి బావగారా అంటే, యేమే గుడ్డికంటి మరదలా అన్నాడట.

When a woman said “O conceited brother-in-law,” he answered “Well, one eyed sister-in-law.”

1593. బడే సాయబు జ్యోశ్యులూ తొలి యేకాదశి యెన్నడు.

Like asking Bare Sahib the astronomer on what day the feast of Toli Yékadas’i would fall.

Asking a man something which he cannot possibly answer.

1594. బర్రె కొమ్ము అంటే, యిర్రి కొమ్ము అంటాడు.

When one says it is a she-buifalo's horn, the other says it is a doe’s.

Foolish argumentation.

1595. బర్రె చస్తే పాడి బయిట పడుతుంది.

When the buffalo dies, it comes out how much milk she gave.

1596. బర్రె దూడ వద్దా పాత అప్పుల వాడి వద్దా వుండరాదు.

You should not stay near a young buffalo, or an old creditor.

1597. బలవంత మాఘ స్నానము.

Forced bathing in Magha.

The mornings of the month Mâgha ( January-February) are cold.

A disagreeable duty.

1598. బలవంతుని సొమ్ముగాని బాపడి సొమ్ము కాదు.

Property is the strong man’s not the poor Brahman's.

Might overcomes right.

1599. బలిజె పుట్టుక పుట్టవలె, బతాయి బుడ్డి కొట్టవలె.

You must be born a Balije to toss off Batavia arrack

Balije is a caste.

1600. బాపనవాని కొలువూ తెల్ల గుర్రపు కొలువూ కొలువ కూడదు.

You should not serve a Brahman or a white horse.

There is no end to your labor.

1601. బారకాడివలె పడ్డావు, నీవెవరవురా మా యింటి దేవుడికి మొక్కను.

You have fallen like a log, who are you to worship our household god ?

Bârakâdi is a long yoke used for training hullocks.

Said to a stranger who, under pretence of worshiping the god, came for food.

1602. బావ మరిది బ్రతకకోరును, దాయాది చావ కోరును.

Your wife's brother will wish you to live, your paternal relatives will wish you to die.

When a Hindu dies his widow is supported by her relatives, and his portion of the family property goes to his relations on the father's side.

1603. బావా నీ భార్య ముండమోశినదోయి అంటే, మొర్రో అని యేడ్చినాడట.

When his brother-in-law said to him “O brother-in-law! your wife has become a widow,” he cried bitterly.

Said of a blockhead.

1604. బావిలోతు చూడ వచ్చునుగాని, మనస్సులోతు చూడ కూడదు.

You can see the depth of a well, but not ‘the depth of the mind.

No one can see into another further than his teeth. (Danish)^[1]

1605. బాన తప్పినవాడూ బడిం తిరిగినవాడూ వకటి.

A man that breaks his word and a vagrant are alike.

1606. బిచ్చపు కూటికి శనేశ్వరమడ్డగించినట్టు.

Saturn prevented the [eating of] food got by begging.

1607. బిచ్చపు వాణ్ని చూస్తే బీద వానికి కోపము.

The sight of a beggar rouses a poor man’s anger.

Said impertinently by a beggar when he gets nothing.

1608. బిచ్చానకు పోయినా బిగువు తప్పలేదు, దుప్పటి పోయినా వల్లెవాటు తప్పలేదు.

Although he goes to beg his pride is not diminished, although his cloth has gone the scarf is not removed from his neck.

There’s nothing agrees worse, than a proud mind and a beggar’s purse.

1609. బిడ్డ చక్కిలము వలె యెండిపోయినాడంటే, చక్కిలాలు యిమ్మని యేడ్చినాడట.

When one said “the child has shrunk up like a Qakkilam” the child cried out “ give me Qakkilams.”

Çakkilamu is "a biscuit made of twisted rings of paste without sugar" ( Brown.)

1610. బిడ్డను వేశి లోతు చూచినట్టు.

Like throwing a child into a well to find out the depth.

1611. బిడ్డ యెదిగితే కుండ యెదుగును.

As the child grows, the pot grows.

i.e. It eats more.

A growing youth has a wolf in his belly.

1612. బిడ్డ లేని ముద్దు, వాన లేని వరద.

Fondling without a child, a flood without rain.

1613. బీద వాడు బిచ్చపు వాడికీ లోకువ.

A poor man is even lower than a beggar.

1614. బురద గుంటలో పంది సామిత.

Like a pig in the mire.

1615. బురదబుక్కడము వంటివాడు.

A man like an eel.

Sloth. Apathy.

1616. బుర్రకు వక గుణము, జిహ్వకు వక రుచి.

Every head has its idiosyncrasy, and every tongue its taste.

All tastes are tastes. (Italian)^[2]

There is no disputing of tastes, appetites, and fancies.

1617. బూడిద గుంటలో కుక్క సామిత.

Like a dog lying in the warm ashes.

Keeping quiet for a while, but soon returning to mischief.

1618. బూడిదలో చేశిన హోమము.

Like pouring out an offering on ashes.

A useless or unprofitable work.

1619. బూడిదలో పోశిన పన్నీరు.

Like sprinkling rose water on ashes.

(See No. 39, 1618. )

Wanton waste.

1620. బెదిరించి బెదిరించి బెల్లపు కుండకు తూటు పొడిచినదట.

All her threats ended in making a hole in the molasses pot.

1621. బెల్లపు పిళ్లారికి ముడ్డి గిల్లి నైవేద్యం.

Offering the Molasses Ganêśa a bit nipped off his own person.

Said of a stingy man.

1622. బొంకరా బొంకరా పోలిగా అంటే, టంగుటూరి మిరియాలు తాటి కాయలంతేశి అన్నాడట.

“Go on with your lies Poliga,” said one, “The Țanguțûru pepper is as big as Palmyra fruit,” he replied.

He may lie boldly who comes from afar. (French)^[3]

1623. బొంత కుట్టుకొన్నవాడు కప్పుకో లేడా.

Can he who has sewn himselfa quilt, not cover himself with it ?

1624. బొగ్గులలో రామచిలుక.

A beautiful parrot (Ramachiluka ) among coals.

A good thing found in a bad place.

1625. బొచ్చు కాల్చితే బొగ్గులవునా.

If you burn hair will it become charcoal ?

Vain economy.

1626. బొట్నవేలు సున్నమయితే బోర్ల పడుతాడు.

When he has chunam on his thumb, he is upset with conceit.

Having "chunam on the thumb" means ability to afford to eat a little betel nut. Chunam is rubbed on the leaf with the thumb.

1627. బోగం వలపూ బొగ్గు తెలుపూ లేదు.

There is no love in harlots or whiteness in coals.

1628. బోడి తలకు బొడ్డు మల్లెలు ముడిచినట్టు.

Like decorating a bald man with a jasmine garland.

Boddu Malle is the Jasminum Sambac.

Something being thrown away upon a person.

1629. బోడి నెత్తిన టెంకాయ కొట్టినట్టు.

Like beating a shaven head with a cocoanut

As used to be done to a Sannyâsi ( religious mendicant) by his disciples when he was about to die.

1630. బోడెద్దుకు పోటు మప్పడము.

Training a hornless bullock to gore.

Leading the innocent to vice.

1531. బ్రతకని బిడ్డ తెగబారెడు.

The dead infant is always a fine child.

Thought more of when dead than when living.

For folks fare well, and fair children die.

1632. బ్రతికి వుంటే, బలుసుకూర తిని వుండ వచ్చును.

If I live, I can exist on Balusukura.

Balurukura is the Canthium Parviflorum.

Preferring hardship to oppression. “Submission to any necessity however grievous." (Elliot. )

What can't be cured must be endured.

1633. బ్రతికి వుండగా పాలు లేదు గాని, చచ్చిన వెనక గంగి గోవును దానము చేస్తానన్నట్టు.

While he lived no milk was given to him, but he was promised that a sacred cow would be presented [on his account] to a Brahman, after his death.

1534. బ్రతికే బిడ్డ అయితే, పాశిన వాసన యెందుకు వస్తున్నది.

If the child is to live, why should there be such an offensive smell ?

Said of a sure sign.

1635. బ్రహ్మకూ పుట్టుతున్నది రిమ్మ తెగులు.

Brahma himself becomes enamoured.

1636. బ్రహ్మ తలిస్తే ఆయుస్సుకు తక్కువా, మొగుడు తలిస్తే దెబ్బలకు తక్కువా.

If Brahma wishes, will there be any lack in the length of your days? If the husband wishes, will there be any lack of blows ?

1637. బ్రహ్మ వ్రాసిన వ్రాలు తిరుగునా.

Will the writing written by Brahma fail ?

1638. బ్రహ్మాస్త్రానికి తిరుగు లేదు.

There is no turning to a Brahmastra.

Brahmâstra is the fabulous weapon of Brahma.

Said of anything which is irresistible.

1639. బ్రాహ్మణుని చెయ్యీ యేనుగ తొండమూ వూరకుండవు.

A Brahman’s hand and an elephant’s trunk are never quiet.

1640. బ్రాహ్మణుని మీది సంధ్యా కోమటి మీది అప్పూ నిలవదు.

The prayers due by a Brahman will not remain [unsaid ], and the debt due by a Komati will not remain [unpaid].

1641. బ్రాహ్మణులలో చిన్న, బెస్తలలో పెద్ద.

The youngest among Brahmans, the eldest among fishermen.

Are made drudges.

1642. బ్రాహ్మణులలో నల్లవాణ్నీ మాలలలో యెర్రవాణ్నీ నమ్మరాదు.

You should not trust a black man among Brahmans, or a fair man among Pariahs.

భ.

1643. భక్తిలేని పూజ పత్రి చేటు.

Worship without faith is a mere waste of flowers.

Flowers are used in offerings.

1. Man kan ikke see en Anden længer end til Tænderne.
2. Tutti i gusti son gusti.
3. A beau mentir qui vient de loin.
