TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT

2568. మోటకు కోపము ముక్కుమీద.

The rough man's anger is on his nose.

             Said a very bad tempered man.

2569. మూహము లేకపోతే, మూదము లేదు.

Where there is no love, there is no delight.

2570. యధాయధలందరూ వెల్లువను పోగా, పుల్లాకు నా పని యేమి అన్నదట.

After all the great men had been carried away by the flood, the lef dish said "What is to become of me?"

2571. యధార్దమునకు యేదు చుట్లు అక్కర లేదు.

For trhe truch seven twists are not required.

          When you tell the truth you can be outspoken.
               Truth seeks no corners (Latin)*

2572. యుగాలనాటి యుఢిష్టిరుడు.

A Yudhisshti8ra of the olden dlays.

     Applied, ironocilly, to a great liar.
          he shall have the king's horse.

2573. యోగికీ రోగికీ భోగికీ నిద్రలేదు.

There is sleep for an ascetic, a sick man, or a rake.

2574. రాగము రానివాడూ రోగము లేనివాడూ లేడు.

There is no one who cannot hum a tune, there is no one free from disease.

2575. రాజాం కాయ పిచ్చికొండ, యా మన్నగారికి భసా పంకం.

"0 king! accept this cocoanut" [ said one, ] "My elder brother is agitated at [the sight of] the Royal Court" [ said the other. ]

There were two clerical Brahman brothers who were very poor, bat well versed in the Vedas. Vexed at their poverty, they proposed to go to the king, present him with a cocoanut and obtain a present in return. Having arrived at Court, the elder brother held out the cocoanut to the king and attempted to say Tj»zr» "IjoT^ctSb ^)xk\8rto& (Raja tenkaya puc'jukondi) "0 king! accept the cocoanut" but being quite confused, mumbled nonsensically Ty2T°0 "5-d& S)v3\§"o£» (Rajan kaya pichchikonda). The younger brother attempted to apologize but was equally flurried and stammered out <j£r» sfcrfNTvSS $*r»oSoSfo (Ta mannagariki bhasapankam) instead of saying sir «5#jTT»8§ 'jS^T'g'o'Xjo (Ma. annagariki sa" bhakampam) "my elder brother is agitated at [ the sight of ] the Royal Court." The king was greatly amused and gave them each a present.

2576. రాజీకా సౌదా.

A bargain with the consent [ of both parties. ] (Hind.) i. e. the purchaser and the seller.

In the days of Muhammadan Government free trade was unknown and the poor were forced to sell at the prices fixed by their oppressive Rulers.

2577. రాజు కూతురయినా వకని ఆలే.

Even the king's daughter must be some one's wife.

2578. రాజుల సొమ్ము రాళ్ల పాలూ, లంజల పాలూ.

The wealth of kings goes to stones and harlots.

Kings addicted to debauchery spent their wealth in constructing houses, temples, &c. and also lavished much on their concubines instead of spending their Revenue for the good of people they governed. TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT.

2579. రామాయణమంటే యేమో అనుకొన్నానుగాని, మాశి బరువు వున్నది అన్నాడట.

When I heard ramayana I did not know what it was, but [I dind] it is the weight of a man.

2580. రాముని తోక.

Rama's tail. Aoke--a bad reader istead of reading రామునితో కపివరుండిట్లనియె (Raamunito kapivarunditlaniye) ('The Monkey-Chief said Rama') read రాముని తోక పివరుండు,&c.(Ramuni toka pivarundu &c.)

2581. రాముని వంటి రాజు వుంటే, హనుమంతుని వంటి బంటు అప్పుడే వుంటాడు.

When there is a king like Rama, a servant like Hanuman will at once be found.

2582. రామో లక్ష్మణ మబ్ర వీత్.

Ramo, Lakshmana, Mabra, and --his tail! The interpretation of the ignoramus of the sentence Ramo Lakshmanam, abravit ("Rama said to Lakshmana")

2583. రాళ్ళు గుండ్లు దొర్లించినట్టు మాట్లాడుతాడు.

He speaks like one rolling stones and boulders, Said of a man who speaks boldly whether right or wrong. 10 (73) ఆంధ్రలొకోక్తిచంద్రికాశేషము.

2584. రెండు ఆవుల పాలు తాగిన దూడ.

A calf which has drunk the milk of two cows. It is common among Hindus for childless persons to adopt children of their friends and treat them as their own. Such children are pelted both by their real and by their adoptive parents, and are in consequence often spoilt.

2585. రోగము వకటి, మందు వకటి.

The disease is one, the medicine is another. i. e. the one is not fitted to remove the other. Said of unsuitable remedies.

2586. లంక కాల్చినవాడు హనుమంతుడు;.

The man who burnt lank is Hanuman.

2587. లంజకొడుకు తండ్రికి తద్దినం పెట్టినట్టు.

Like a bastard performing his father's annual ceremonies.

2588. లంజ పితాళ్ళకు పెట్టి అకాశము చూచినదట.

A harlot made an offering to the manes of her ancestors and looked towards heaven.

2589. లంజలు లేకపోతే గుడి రంజిల్లదు ప్రజల మనసూ రంజిల్లదు.

If there were no harlots the temple would not shine and men's minds would not be facinated. An apology for the impure accomplishments of the Hindu's religion!

2590. లబ్ధుడికి పని నిండా, లబ్ధుడికి ఖర్చు నిండా..

A man got [ for nothing ] has much work, a miser has great expenses.

Labdhudu is applied to a prisoner taken in war and made a Blare.—The false economy of misers costs them much in the end.

2591. లక్షణం చెడితే అవలక్షణం.

If Lakshanam is neglected it becomes Avalakshanam.

There is a pun here on the word Lakshanam which as a noun signifies the ' rules of classic composition,' and as an adjective * handsome.'—Ana" lakshanam means ' ugly,' ' deformed.'

2592. లక్ష నక్షత్రములయిన వక చంద్రుడు కాడు.

A lakh of stars won't make one moon.

"Better one virtuous son than even a hundred fools; the one moon dispels darkness and not hosts of stars." ( Hitopadesa Book I. 17. )*

2593. లింగము మీది యెలుక.

A rat on the Lingam.

One is afraid to knock the rat off lest he should strike the Lingam, and at the same time he cannot bear to see the emblem so insulted.

A difficult dilemma.

2594. లేనివాడు పుడమి లేనివాడు.

One who has not is as one who is not in the world.

i. e. A penniless man has nothing in the world.

2595. లోభికి రెంట నష్టి

A miser loses both ways.

2596. వంగనములో పుట్టినిది పొంగలి పెట్టితే పోతుందా.

Will [the evil] born in the family go by offering Pongali?

2597. వంశమో వాడి ఆలి తోకో.

[I don't know] whether it comes form his family or from his wife's tail. i.e. whether the man's means actions or the fruit o hsi low birth or whether he is instigated to such conduct by his wife.

2598. వచ్చేవారికి స్వాగతం, వెళ్ళే వారికి ఆసీమాంతం.

Welcome the coming, speed the parting guests. Svatam signifies literally "welcome." --Asimontam is an abbreviation of Asimantamuanuvrajeyam." "I follow lyou to the bnoundary," used to Brahman guests at conclusion of a Sraddha.

2599. వట్టి చెయ్యి మూర వేస్తే యేమి ఫలము.

If you measure cubits with an empty hand, what is the use of it? i.e. What is the use of measuring the air.

2600. వడ్లగింజలోది బియ్యపు గింజ.

That which is in the paddy is rice.

            Said to an inquisitive person.

2601. వడ్లు ముత్తుం, పిచ్చికలు ఆర్దుం.

Three Tums of paddy and six Tums of sparrows. Losses keeping pace with gains.

2602. వాడి తండ్రి మా తండ్రి సయాం మొగవాండ్లు.

His father and my father are real males. An answer given to an impertinent question regarding relationslhip.

2603. వాడు చెడ్డాడు తాగుబోతు, నాకు వక ముంతెడు కల్లు పొయ్యి అన్నాడట.

Hang the durnkered ! Pour me out a potful of taddy.

2604. వాశిరెడ్డి వెంకటాద్రినాయుడు తులాభారం తూగితే, కరెడ్ల కామక్క, వంకాయల భారం తూగినదట.

When Vaasireddy Venkatadri Naidu was weighed in Gold Karedla Kmakka was weighed in brinjals. It was an old custom for Indian princes and wealthy landowners to give their weight in Gold to Brahmans.

2605. విందూ మందూ మూడు పూటలు.

For feasting or for medicine, three times.

A man will not be treated as guest for more three meals and he is not expected to stay longer.--The effect of medicine should be tried by three doses after which, if it fail, it should be given up.

2606. విక్రమార్కునివంటి రాజు వుంటే, భట్టివంటి మంత్రి అప్పుడే వుంటాడు.

When there is a prince like Vikramarka, a minister like Bhatti will at once be found.

2607. విగ్రహ పుష్టి, నైవేద్య నష్టి

Stoutness of body, consumption of food.

The only advantage of obesity is expensive living.

2608. విత్తము కొద్దీ విభవము, విద్య కొద్దీ వినయము.

In proportion to the wealth there will be enjoyment, in proportion to the learning there will be humility.

2609. వినయము లోకవశ్యము, విద్య రాజవశ్యము.

Humility subjects the world, learning subjects kings.

Humility often gains more than pride. (Ital'an.)

2610. విన్నవి అన్నీ విశ్వసించ వద్దు, విశ్వసించినవి అన్నీ వెలిబుచ్చ వద్దు.

Don't believe all you hear, don't divulge all you believe.

Do not all you can; spend not all you have; believe not all you hear; and tell not all you know.

2611. విశ్వమేలే నకులుడు, అశ్వశిక్షకుడు అయినాడు.

The world"governing Nakula became a horsebreaker.

The will of Providence.

2612. వీసము యిచ్చి వాసానికి వొడ్డే వాడు.

One who gives a Visam and expects a "Vasam.

For Visam see No. 876 j the word here means of "Jj of a Rupee ( anna ).— Vasam is a rafter; (the original word has been retained to preserve the jingle .) TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT.

2613. వీసానికి వాసన్నర అయితే, మూలన్నర యెంత.

If a rafter and half for a Visam, how much for s nrs, smf s js;g?

Chaffing is an Arthmetician.

2614. వెట్టికి కని వెలుగులో పారేశినారా.

Did [my parents] beget me for nothing and throw me into a hedge? Said by a disciple illtreatred by his Guru, or by an apprentice illtreated by his master, &c.

2615.వెన్న పెట్టితే మింగలేడు, వేలు పెట్టితే కరవలేడు.

If you give him butter he cannot swallow it, if you give him your finger he cannot bite it.

As demure as if butter would not melt in his mouth, and yet choke will not choke him.

2616. వెయ్యి ఆవులు గలవానికి వకటి తన్నుకొనిపోతే యేమి.

What is it to him who has thousand cows, if one will not be milked?

                      (See Nos.243,284,1512,1812.)

Said by an impertinent beggar, when refused alms.

2617. వెయ్యి పుట్ల వడ్లకు వక్క చిలకపురుగు చాలును.

one chilakapurugu is enough for a thousand Puttis of Paddy.

Chilakapurugu (lit. parrot- worm) is a small warm found in stored grain.

2618. వెయ్యి వరహాలుపెట్టి యేనుగును కొనుక్కొని అరవీసం అంకుశానకు పాలుమాలనా.

Should one buy an elephant for a thousand pagodas, and grudge for half a Visam for for a hook to drive him with?

      Visam (No.876) is here used for an anna.

2619. వెర్రివాని విందు పెట్టేవరకు నిశ్చయం లేదు.

A mad man's feast is never certain till he gives it.

2620. వెలగల జీవరత్నం వక్కటే చాలును, చిలికిరాళ్ళు తట్టెడు వున్నా ఫలము యేమి.

One valuable gem of the first water is sufficient--though of pebbles there be a basketful, of what use are they?

  One grain of pepper is worth a cart-load of hail.

2621. వెలలేని మాణిక్యము.

A ruby without price.

   Said of anything of inestimable value. 

2622. వెల్లకిత్తలా పరుండి వుమ్మివేస్తే, ముఖముమీద పడుతుంది.

if spit when lying on your back it will fall on your face. Who spits against heaven, it falls on his head. (French)* He who spits against heaven will have it fall on his face (Spanish)t "Whose casteth a stone on high casteth it on his own head." Ecclesiasticus xxvii.25.
