శిల్ప లక్షణము * *
సకలకళాతత్వవిదు డగు శ్రీ శుక్రాచార్యుడు,
ధ్యానయోగస్య సంసిధ్రా ప్రతిమాలక్షణం స్మృతమ్
ప్రతిమా కారకో మర్త్యో యథా ధ్యానరతో భవేత్
తథా నా న్యేన మార్గణ పత్య క్షేణాపి వా ఖలు
దేవానాం ప్రతిబింబాని కుర్యా ఛ్ఛేయస్కరాణి చ
స్వర్గ్యాణి మానవావీ నా మస్వర్యా ణ్యశుభానిచ
ఆపి శ్రేయస్కరం నృణాం దేవ విలంబలక్షణమ్
సలక్షణం మర్త్యబింబం నహి శ్రేయస్కరం సదా॥
అని, దేవతల బింబములను జిలించుటయే చిత్రవిద్య యొక్క పరమలక్ష్యమని నిర్దేశించుచున్నాడు. సలక్షణముగ వ్రాసిన మర్త్యబింబముకంటె, నవలక్షణముగ జిలింపబడినను దేవప్రతిమయే శ్రేయస్కరమని వాని మతము. ఇవి ఋషి వాక్యములు. ఈ శ్లోకములందు శిల్పము యొక్క పరాకాష్ఠ నిరూపింపబడినది.
"All Indian Art is a throwing out of self-vision formed by a going within to find out the secret significance of form and appearance, a discovery of the subject in one's deeper self, the giving of Soul-form to that vision, and, a remoulding of the material and natural shape to express the psychic truth of it with the greatest possible purity and power of outline, and the greatest possible concentrated rythmic unity of significance in all the parts of an indivisible artistic whole."
