TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT.

మ.

2516. మంచి చేశిన ముంగికి మరణము సంభవించినట్టు.

Although it did a good act, death overtook the Mongoose.

 The Mongoose tore in pieces a snake which approached a sleeping child.  The mother who had been out, met the little animal covered with the bnlood of the snake and killed it, thinking it had killed her son.--

2517. మంచివానికె ఒక మాట, మూర్ఖునికి వక చేట.

A word to a good man, [a blow with] sieve for an obstinate blockhead.

                       (See No.1041)

A blow with a sieve, a broom, or a slipper is very degrading.

2518. మందూ లేదు గుండులేదు, తొపాకి పట్టి కాల్చుము అన్నట్టు.

Like saying "Take the gun and shoot" when there is no power and no9 ball.

2519. మడ్డి ముండకు మల్లెపూలు యిస్తే, మడిచి ముడ్డికింద పెట్టుకొన్నదట.

When Jasmin flowers were given to a boorish woman, she folded them up and sat on them. Instead of putting the gnarled round her neck.--malle (Prop.JasminumSambac) is a general name given to all those common jasmines (W.EIliot.)


2520. మణి మణితో కొయ్య వలెను.

You must cut a gem with a gem.

2521. మతులు యెన్ని చెప్పినా మంకుబుద్ధి మానదు.

However much advice you give her, she will not mend her stubbornness.

2522. మన బంగారము మంచిదయితే, కంసాలి యేమి చెయ్య్యగలడు.

If our gold be good, what the goldsmith do?

 The puresst gold is the most easily tested, and the goldsmith cannot easily cheat with it .
           A good character is proof agsinst slander.

2523. మనసెరుగని అబద్దము వున్నాదా.

Is there a lie unknown to the heart?

2524. మనస్సుకు మన్నస్సే సాక్షి.

The mind is witness to the mind.

 i.e. A man is judged by his own consiencs .

2525. మనువు చెడి ముండ బుద్ధిమంతురాలయినది.

When the good match is broken off, the jade becomes wise.

2536. మనువును నమ్మి. బొంత బోర్లవేసుకొన్నదట.

Trusting to the match, she turned everything topsy turvy.

             But she was disappointed after all.

2537. మనుష్యులు వుండరుగాని, మాటలు వుంటున్నవి.

Men remain not, but words last.

2528. మన్ను వెట్టితే బంగారము, బంగారము పెట్టితే మన్ను.

You get gold out of earch and earth out of gold.

                   i.e.you buy land with money.

2529. మరచిపోయి చచ్చినాను ప్రాణమా రమ్మంటే, తిరిగి వచ్చునా.

If one says "O life! I did by mistake, come back." will he life return?

2530. మాటకు మాట శృంగారము, ఫేటకు కోట శృంగారము.

A word is the ornament of a word, a fort is the ornament to a town.

2531. మాటలు యెన్ని చెప్పినా, మామగారి సొత్తు వదలను అన్నదట.

However much you talk, I won't give up eating with my maternal uncle.

 Said by a woman who had been brought up from childhood by heer uncle.

2532. మాదిగవాడి ఆలు అయినా మాడే కాలుకి చెప్పు లేదు.

Though a shoemaker's wife, she has no shoes for her burning feet. A shoemaker's wife and a smith's mare are always the worst shod.

2533. మాధుకరి వాని యింటికి వుపాదానం వాడు పోయినట్టు.

Like the raw rice beggar going to the hosue of the boiled rice beggar. Some beggtars will only receive raw rice which they cook for themselves, others receive boiled rice.

2534. మాపిల్లవానికి ముప్పయిరెండు గుణములువున్నవిగాని , రెండుమాత్రము తక్కువ.

My boy has the thirty-two qualities, only he is too short.

2535 మామతోకూడ మంచము అల్లి తాతతోకూడా తడిక కట్టడానకు వచ్చినదట.

Having woven the caught with her maternal uncle, she came to put up the mat with her grandfather.

2536. మారికి వారశూలా.

Will Mari care for a 'bad day'?

2537. మాలిస్తు చేశినట్లే వుండవలె, కాపు చెడ్డట్లే వుండవలె.

One must be threshing, and the master must be cheated.

             Said by a dishonesst servant.

2538. మాశి మీద మాశి యెక్కి కూర్చుంటే, మూశి మూశి చచ్చినాను అన్నాడట.

"When a man gets up and sits on a man, the weight kills me" said he. A stupid lout persuaded by his wife to go and har Ramayana read as the thought it might improve his mind. While standing leaning his head on his sick, a scamp got upon his shoulders and sad there. The blockhead thought it was a necessary part of the performance. When he returned home he was aksed how he liked the Ramayana and replied as above.

2539. మాశీ పెద్దా మాశీవుండావు, బుద్దీ గాడ్దె బుద్దీ వుండాది.

To look at you arte a great man, but you are a mean fellow at heart.

2540. మా సేన బొమణి నక్కలు గూసెన్.

Bomani Jackals cried in our stmy.

 A reader complained that he received less pay than an xpounder.He was told that much less learning is required. On the next occasion he read the Andhrabharata in such a manner that the expounder was completely puzzled. The passage, correctly written, is as follows:--

క11. మాసె నభోమణి నక్కలు గూసెన్.

The sun (Nabhomani) turned dark; the jackals cried. Which was interapreted in the above redicluous manner.

2541. మా సొమ్ము మాకిచ్చుట మడి మాన్యములిచ్చుట.

Giving me back my own money will giving me glebe land.

                   Said by a Creditor.

2542. మిగిలిన సున్నాన్నీ నెగిలిన రాజునూ వదలరాదు.

You must not desert the leavings of  cunam or a deposed king.

The lchunam will be wanted again to eat with betel leaf (see No.823.). The king, if restored to power, will reward tthose who were faithful to him in adveraity.

2543. మితము తప్పితే అమృతమయినా విషమే.

If you exceed the bounds of moderation nector too is poision.

2544. మీ గురువులు మా శిష్యులవద్దనే చదువుకొన్నారు.

Your Guru learnt from my pupils.

  Said a disputation between two rival pandits.

2545. ముండ్లమీద పడ్డ గుడ్డ మెల్లెగా తీసుకో వలెను..

The cloth which has fallen upon thorns must be taken off slowly.

2546. ముందరి కాళ్లకు బందాలువేశి ముండల తాళ్లు తెంపేవాడు..

A man who ties the fore legs together and breaks the widows' cords.

Said of a crafty swindler, who having made his victim as helpless as an animal whose fore feet have been tied together proceeds to plunder. Widows wear no cords ( See No. 1415 ); the expression signifies a state of helplessness.

2547. ముందు చూస్తే అయ్యవారి గుర్రముగా వున్నది, వెనక చూస్తే సాయెబు గుర్రముగా వున్నది.

Looking from the front it seems to be the Brahman's horse, looking from behind it seems to be the Sahib's.

The Komati's evidence ( See No. 729 ). The words are ambiguous and bear another meaning viz. "Before, this was the Brahman's horse—now, it is the Sahib's" ( i. e. the Sahib has taken possession of it).

2548. ముందు వచ్చినందుకు మున్నూరు వరహాలు దండుగ, మళ్లీ యేల వచ్చినావే మాయధారి తొత్తా.

When you came before you cost me three hundred pagodas, why have you come again, you deceitful jade?

A man married a bad wife. After getting 300 pagodas' worth of jewels from him she went off to her mother's house and left her husband to shift for himself. After some time, the jewels having been sold and the proceeds spent, she returned to try her old trick, whereupon the husband accosted her as above.

2549. ముక్కు పట్టుకొంటే ప్రాణము పోనా.

If I touch your nose will you lose your life?

A Guru was endeavouring to initiate his disciple into the mysteries of Pranayama ( see Wilson) and touched his nose which the unwilling disciple pretended caused him intense pain. "This ceremony is performed in the following manner: 1st he [ the Brahman ] presses in the right nostril with the fourth finger of his left hand, repeating the name of each Deity; and counting them nine times over upon the joints of the fingers of his right hand with great rapidity, half closing his eyes the while, and drawing in his breath: then gently pressing in the left nostril with the thumb, he breathes out, repeating the same name as many times over. Then releasing the right nostril, and still pressing in the left with the thumb, he terminates the Prunayama [Pranayama.]" ( The Sundkya by Mrs. S. C. Belnos.)

Said of a lazy sculk.

2550. ముగ్గురు ఆడవారు కూడితే, పట్టపగలే చుక్కలు పొడుస్తవి.

When three women join together the stars come out in broad daylight.

The above is taken from the following verse :—

క|| జగములు వణకవె యొకతెకు |
నగణితముగ నిద్దరయిన నంబుధులింకున్‌ |
ముగురాడ వారు గూడిన |
సుగుణాకర పట్టపగలు చుక్కలు పొడుచున్‌ ||

[ At the sight ] of one woman, will not the worlds tremble P When there are two the oceans will greatly sink; when three women join together the •tars will appear in broad daylight, 0 Possessor of good qualities!

2551. ముదికొమ్మ వంగదు

The old bough will not bend.

( See No. 101.)

It is not caty to straighten in the oak the crook that grew in the Sapling. 'o«'...' ఆంద్రలోకోక్తిచంద్రికాశేషము.

2552. ముదిరి చచ్చినా, యెండి యిడిశినా వగవు లేదు.

If [a man] ripens and dies, if [the grain] goes into pieces there is no grief. When a man dies at a good old age, his relations do not greatly grieves for him; and if the grain goes into pieces when pounded on account of over dryness, people do not care much as the grit is nearly as good as the whole grain.

2553. ముద్దున పేరు చెడె, మురిపాన నడువు చెడె.

The name is spoilt by affection, the gait is spoil by sstrutting. The child's proper name is corrupted into a familiar name as Sinayya for Srinivasayya, Kakkai for Kanakamma, &c.

2554. ముప్పయి మూడు కోట్ల దేవతలూ కూడి ముక్కు పట్టించగలరు గాని, నారాయణా అనిపించ గలరా.

Thirty-three crores of good joined together can make me hold my nose. but can they make me to say Narayana?

You cannot make an ass drink if he is not thirsty.(French.)* You may force a man to shut his eyes but not to sleep.(Danlah)t

2555. ముప్పై యేండ్లు కష్టము అనుభవించినవాడూ లేడు, ముప్పై యేండ్లు సుఖము అనుభవించినవాడూ లేడు.

There is no one who has suffered thirty years of trouble,there is no one who has enjoyed thirty years of happiness.

2556. ముసలివాడికి ముండ ముద్దు.

A old man is fond of women

2557. మూడు జన్మాల సంగతి చెప్పగలను; పూర్వ జన్మమునందు యిచ్చి పెట్టుకో లేదు గనుక యీ జన్మమునందు దేవుడు నాకు యివ్వలేదు, యీ జన్మాన వకరికి యివ్వలేదు గనుక ముందు జన్మానకు నాకు యేమీ లేదు.

I can tell my state in three births—in the last I laid up nothing by generosity, in this God has given me nothing, and as I can give to no one here there is nothing for me in the next birth.

2558. మెతుకులు చల్లితే కాకులకు తక్కువా.

If you scatter grains [ of boiled rice ] will there be any lack of crows ?

2559. మెత్తనాళ్లు పోయినవి, చెత్తనాళ్లు వచ్చినది.

The days of bedding are gone, the days of straw have come.

The reverses of fortune.

2560. మేకును పెరికిన కోతి వలె.

Like the monkey that drew out the wedge.

"' You know the story of the Monkey, don't you?' [ said Karataka ].

'- The Monkey drew tho sawyer*! wedge, and died: Let meddlers mark 't, and be ed'fied'"

'No !' said Damanaka. 'How was it P

• In this way,' answered Karataka :—

'In south Behar, close by the retreat of Dhurmma, there was an open plot of ground, upon which a temple was in course of erection, under the management of a man of the Kayeth caste named Subhadatta. A carpenter upon the works had partly sawed through a long beam of wood, and wedged it open, and was gone away, leaving the wedge fixed. Shortly afterwards a large herd of Monkeys came frolicking that way, and one of their number, directed doubtless by the Angel of death, got astride the beam, and grasped the wedge, with his tail and lower parts dangling down between the pieces of the wood. Not content with this, in the mischief natural to monkeys, he began to tug at the wedge j till at last it yielded to a great effort and came out; when the wood closed upon him, and jammed him all fast. So perished the monkey, miserably crushed; and

I say again,—

"Let mcddlen mark it and be ed'fied.""

2561. మొండికి తగ్గ మిండడు.

A master fit for a shulk.

2562. మొగుడు చచ్చిన వెనుక ముండకు బుద్ధివచ్చినది.

After her husband's death, the jade came to her senses.

2563. మొగుడు లేని దానికి మంత్రసాని యెందుకు.

What does a woman without a husband want with a midwife?

2564. మొదట మానెడు, దూడ చస్తే దుత్తెడు.

At first one Manika, after the calf's death a potful [of milk]

2565. మొదల మోదుగ పూస్తే, కొన సంపెంగ పూచునా.

Will [a branch] bear Madduga flowers at one end and Sampenga at the other?

Moduga is the Butea Frondosa, the flowers of which have no perfume. Sampenga is the Michelia Champaca.

2566. మొకాట్లో మెడ నరం పట్టినది.

A neck-sprain in the knee.

Like saying "He has headache in his big toe."

2567. మోకాలు ముణిగినది అని ముక్కు, ముంచుకొంటారా.

Because the water is up to the knee are we to plunge above nose? Because we experience a little difficulty, are we to give way to despair?

2568. మోటకు కోపము ముక్కుమీద.

The rough man's anger is on his nose.

             Said a very bad tempered man.

2569. మూహము లేకపోతే, మూదము లేదు.

Where there is no love, there is no delight.

2570. యధాయధలందరూ వెల్లువను పోగా, పుల్లాకు నా పని యేమి అన్నదట.

After all the great men had been carried away by the flood, the lef dish said "What is to become of me?"

2571. యధార్దమునకు యేదు చుట్లు అక్కర లేదు.

For trhe truch seven twists are not required.

          When you tell the truth you can be outspoken.
               Truth seeks no corners (Latin)*

2572. యుగాలనాటి యుఢిష్టిరుడు.

A Yudhisshti8ra of the olden dlays.

     Applied, ironocilly, to a great liar.
          he shall have the king's horse.

2573. యోగికీ రోగికీ భోగికీ నిద్రలేదు.

There is sleep for an ascetic, a sick man, or a rake.

2574. రాగము రానివాడూ రోగము లేనివాడూ లేడు.

There is no one who cannot hum a tune, there is no one free from disease.
