TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT
2411. ద్రావిడానాం ఘృతం నాస్తి, మిళ్ళే మిళ్ళే నిరంతరం.
There is no ghi among the Dravidas, [they serve it] always in spoonfuls.
Said by a Telugu man of the Tamilians who eat very little ghi with their food. Milli is a very small spoon used in offerings., &c.,called in Sanscrit Darvvi.

2412. ధర్మము తల కాచును
Virtue protects the head.
The reward of virtue in this life is protection from evil.
2413. ధర్మమే జయము, దైవమే గతి.
Virtue alone is sucess, God alone is a refuge.
2414. ధూపం వేస్తే పాపం పోతున్నది.
If you offer incense, sin will be removed.

2315. నక్కవాత మన్ను కొట్టినాడు.
He threw mud into the mouth of the jackal.
i.e cheated him.
Said of the surprising recovery of a sick man who had been given up, and wshose body it was expected might provide food for the jackals.
2416. నక్కా నక్కా నా నామం చూడు, తిరిగి చూస్తే తిరుమణి చూడు.
O Jackal! Jackal! look at my Namam, if you look again see my Tirumani. (For Namam see No.789)---Tirumani (lit sacred earth) is the nsme given to the outer lines, made with white clay, of the namam.
(45) ఆంద్రలోకోక్తిచంద్రికా శేషము.
2417. నమ్మి వడివీధిలో వేశినవారు యెవరు.
When he throws [hsi property] into the middle of the street and tursts it there,

2418. నమ్మినాను రాయన్నా అంటే, నట్టేట్లో ముంచుతాను లక్ష్మన్నా అన్నాడట.
" I trusted you O Ramanna!" said one "Then I 'll drown you in the middle of the river O Lakshmanna!" replied his friend.
Misplaced confidence
Trust makes way for treachery.

2419. నయము నష్టకారి, భయము భాగ్యకారి.
Leniency is injurious, severity is pprofitable.

2420. నయానా భయానా.
By mildness or severity. If one does not answer, the other must be tried.
2421. నల్ల పూసకు తెల్లపూసా లేదు, తెల్ల పూసకు నల్ల పూసా లేదు.
For the black bead there is no white bead, and for the white bead there is no black bead. Said by wretchedly poor woman could not afford to buy white beads when she had black, or black when she had white. The heads are strung alternatively and used as a necklace by poor woman who have not the means of getting gold or silver ornaments.--Hindu married woman are not permitted to appear without some neck ornament however triffling the value of it may be.

(46) TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT
2422. నల్లి నలిగి పోయినది, చెత్త కానము.
The bug is crushed but the remains are not to be seen. Robbers' slange, referring to a murdered man.--chetta means literally 'rubbish'. 'sweepings'.
2423. నవగ్రహాలు వక్రించి వున్నట్టు.
As if the nine planets were out of their course. Said of a family at sixes and sevens.
2424. నవాబంత దరిద్రుడు, పులి అంత సాధువు.
As poor as Nawab, as mild as tiger.
2425. నవ్వుతూ చేస్తున్నారు, యేడుస్తూ అనుభవిస్తున్నారు.
Laughing they do it, weeping, they suffer for it.

Said of criminals.
2426. నాకు సొగసెందుకు, బాగుంటే సరి.
What do I care for beauty? If it is good it is enough.
2427. నాకూ బెబ్బేనా అంటే, నీకు బెబ్బే నీ అబ్బకూ బెబ్బే అన్నాడట.
Whe he said "What! Bebbe to me?" "Yes Bebbe to you and Bebbe to your faather"was the reply. A great man pressed by his creditors was advised by a friend, himself also a creditor, to escape from their importunities by feigning madness. He acordingly did so, replying to them all like an idiot "bebbe". The plan was successful, and the friend was then asked his debt should be paid, but he himself received the treatment he had prescribed for others.

2428. నాడు కట్టా లేదు, నేడు చించా లేదు.
Neither on that did I put it on, now on this day have I torn it.

Said by a poor fellow who had never had the pleasure of putting on good cloth or the annoyance of tearingit.
2429. నాడు నిలువబడా లేదు, నేడు యెత్తుబడా లేదు.
I was never rich one day and poor another.

Said by a man who had not experienced the ups and downs of fortune, but had remained in a mediocre state throughout his life.
2430. నాడు వుంటే నవాబు సాయెబు, అన్నము వుంటే అమీరు సాయెబు, బీద పడితే ఫకీరు సాయెబు, చస్తే పీరు సాయెబు.
If he has a country, Nawab sahib; if he has food Amir sahib; If he becomes poor, Fakir sahib; when he dies Pir Sahib. The Musaulman sticks to title of Sahib under all circumstances.
2431. నాడు వ్రాశినవాడు నేడు చెరిపి మళ్ళీ వ్రాస్తాడా.
Will he who wrote at that time, now cancel it and write again?

2432. నాభిలొ పుట్టిన పురుగు వంటి వాడు.
One like a warm born in the Nabhi. Nabhi (Sans.Vatsanabha) is an active vegetable poision, 'th root of Aconite forex brought from Nepal' (Wilson).
Said of a stretchaerous Villain.
2433. నా ముందర నీవేమి బ్రతక గలవు అన్నట్టు.
How can you live before me> What are you when compered with me? Said by a conceited Pandit.
(48) TELUGU PROVERBS--SUPPLEMENT
2434. నారిగాడు--నారడు--నారాయడు--నారాయ--నారయ్య--నరాయణయ్య--నారయణరావు--నరయణరావు పంతులు--నారయణారావు పంతులవారు.
Narigadu--Naradu--Naraya--Narayya--Narayanayya--NarayanaRau--NarayanaRau pamtulu--NarayanaRau pamtulavaaru.
When a person is in a very indigent state he is called by the first name (Narigadu) and he receives the other names--each from being more respectable than the last--as he advances in his social position. The heighest position he could possibly attain to would give him the last and most honorofic form (NarayanaRau Pantulavaaru).
2435. నిన్న వున్నవారు నేడు లేరు.
They who yesterday were--today are not. The uncertainity of life To-day stately and brave, to-marrow in the gravet. (Danish)*
2436. నిప్పున కాలడు, నీళ్ళను తడియడు.
He won't be burnt with fire, he won't be wet with Water.
Said an obstinate blockhead.
2437. నిలకడ లేనివాని మాట నీళ్ళమూట.
The word of an untable man is a bundle of water.

A fool's speech is bubble of air.
2438. నీకు ఎక్కడ సంశయమో నాకు అక్కడ సందేహము.
Where you are doubtful, there I am dubious. A joke among pandita when one is not able to help another through difficult passages.
2439. నీపెండ్లాము ముండమోస్తే, నీకు యెవరు అన్నము వండిపెట్టుతారు అన్నాడట.
If your wife becomes a widow, who will cook for you?

7 (49) ఆంధ్రలోకోక్తిచంద్రికాశేషము.
2440. నీ బర్రె గొడ్డును ఎవరు కాస్తారుచూతాము అంటే, నాతిత్తిలోని డబ్బే కాస్తున్నది అన్నాడట.
"Who will watch your buffalo!" said [a herdsman]--"The money in purse will do it" replied [the master]. A fit answer to an impertinant servant.
2441. నీళ్ళమీద వ్రాసిన మాట.
A word written on water.
2442. నీవు తలచినప్పుడు బిడ్డ కనవలెను.
When you wish for it, I must bring forth a child. Said a wife to an unreasonable, exacting husband.
2443. నువ్వులకు తగిన నూనె.
Oil according tothe [quantity of] Sesamum.

2444. నూటికి పెట్టె కోటికి గొరిగించేవాడు.
One who feeds a hundred and shaves (i.e.plunders) a crore.
2445. నూటికి పొడిచి శలగో అనే వాడు.
He kills a hundred and cries "Selaga!" Selaga is a term used in counting or measuring, signifying the completion of one hundred.
Said a great hero.
2446. నూరు అయ్యేవరకు నన్ను కాపాడితే, నూరు అయిన వెనుక నిన్ను కాపాడుతాను.
Save me up to a hundred, and after that I will lsupport you.
Money's advice.
Take care of pencs, the pounds will take care of themselves.
(50) TELUGU PROVERBS-- SUPPLEMENT.
2447. నెయ్యి అని తాగా కూడదు, నూనె అని తలకు పూసుకోనూ కూడదు.
Thinking is to be Ghi must not drink it, thinking it to take to be oil you should not rub it on your hed.

2448. నేర్పగల అమ్మనేతితో అతిరసములు కాలిస్తే, వూర్పుగల అమ్మ వొళ్ళో కట్టుకొని పోయినదట.
When the clever lady had fried the cakes in Glhi, the patient lady walked off with them in her lap. Atirasam is a sweet made of rice meal and syrup and fried, or rather boiled in ghi.
A cool trick.
2449. మెచ్చిపోయిన వాడా వువ్వులు చల్లుము అన్నట్టు.
O unfortunate man! sew Sesamum.
Advice given to a farmer very unfortunate in his crops. The Sesamum crop is generally profitable.
2450. మొదట వ్రాసిన వ్రాలకన్నా, నూరేండ్లు చింతించినా యేమీ లేదు.
Tllhough you hundred years you will get no mroe than has been written on your fore head.

2451. నోరు వుంటే పోరు గెలుస్తాడు.
If he has a mouth he'll win the fight.
