2253. ఓలో సగం చెప్పు నాయనా అన్నాడట.

In O teach me half, O father!

Said by a spoilt child who wished his father to teach him half a letter at a time.

2254. ఓహో బాబూ కనుక్కొన్నారు అన్నాడట.

O father! they have discovered us.

Two Tambalis (No. 173), father and son, went to a Brahmin feast disguised as Brahmans. When the sandal was handed round for making the horizontal Sectarial mark on the forehead, the son took it with his right hand instead of with his left. The server thereupon called him a Tamboli when he stupidly cried out to his father that they had been discovered and brought him too into trouble.

2255. కంటికి రెప్ప, కాలికి చెప్పు.

A lid to the eye, a shoe to the foot.
                           The protection necessary.

2256. కండ్లకు గంతకట్టి అడవిలో వదిలిపెట్టబడ్డ వానివలె.

Like blind folding [and pioning] a man and leaving and leaving him in the jungle.

          Putting a man into great difficulties.

2257. కండ్లు ఆర్చినమ్మ యిండ్లు ఆర్చినది.

  The winking woman ruined families.
              A pun on word Arcu.

2258. కంసాలిమాయ కంసాలికి గాని తెలియదు.

A goldsmith's fraud is only known to a goldsmith.
A story is told of a young goldsmith who disguised himself as a Brahman and married a Brahman's daughter. He perceived and disclosed on one occasion the fraud of another goldsmith who had cheated his father"in"law ; this man in revenge exposed the young impost" r.


2259. కంసాలి వద్ద వుండవలె, కుంపట్లో వుండవలె.

It must be with the goldsmith, or in the chafing"dish.
Said of gold made away with by a swindling goldsmith.


2260. కట్టినవారు వకరు అయితే, కాపురం చేసేవారు వకరు.

The builder [ of a house ] is one and he who lives in it is another.
"He that buildeth, [ let him be] as he that shall not dwell therein." 2 Esdras xvi. 42.


2261. కట్టేయస్వాహా, నీకూ నాకూ చెరీసగాయస్వాహా.

Svaha to the wood, svaha to the twigs—svaha to the shares of you and me.
Svaha is " an exclamation used in making an oblation to the gods" ( Wilson ). When an ignorant impostor was heard repeating the pretended formula; contained in the first part of the above, he added to it the second to shut the mouth of the man who had found him out, by promising him half his fees. 2262. కట్టే లేదు, పిడకా లేదు, కాచీ పోయా నీళ్లూ లేచు, పదవోయి అల్లుడా బావిగట్టుకు అన్నట్టు.

There is no firewood, there is no dry cowdung, there is no water to boil - come away to the wall O son-in-law !
The son-in-law should have been provided with a warm bath, but his wife's parents were too poor.

2263. కద్దు అనడానకూ లేదు అనడానకూ దానికే అధికారమా.

Has she a right to say " there is" or " there is not" 1

A beggar once asked alms from a daughter"in"law when her mother"in" law was out. She told him there was nothing for him. As he went he met the mother"in"law who enquired whether he had received alms at the house. On being told by the beggar that he had been sent away, she brought him back to the house and after chastising her daughter"in"law said to the man " Now you may go, has she any authority to say there are alms for you or there are not?"

Told as an illustration of the fact that a daughter"in"law has no authority whatever in the house.

2264. కన్న తల్లిని కాళ్లు పట్టి ఈడ్చి పినతల్లికి పెట్టరా పిండప్రదానము అన్నట్టు.

Like pulling away your own mother by the legs and saying "Offer the rice"ball for the maternal aunt."

2265. కన్ను మూస్తే కల.

If you shut your eyes, a dream.

After death the unreality of things temporal appears.

2266. కమ్మర వీథిలో సూదులు అమ్మినట్టు.

Like selling needles in the blacksmiths' street.

2267. కరువున కడుపు కాల్చినమ్మను యెన్నటికీ మరవను.

I shall never forget the lady who burnt my stomach [ i. e. who fed me insufficiently ] in the famine time.

2268. కరువులో బిడ్డను అమ్ముకొన్నట్టు

Like selling a child in a famine"

2269. కర్మకు అంతమూ లేదు, కాలమునకు నిశ్చయమూ లేదు.

There is no end to religious ceremonies, and there is no finding the times [fixed for the observance of hem].

2270. కలిగిన వారికి అందరూ చుట్టాలే.

   All are relatives to the rich man.

2271. కాచిన చెట్టుకు రాళ్ల దెబ్బలు.

Blows with stones to the bearing tree.

        The liberal only meet with ingratitude.

The best bearing trees are the most bealem. (Italian.)* It is only at the tree laden with fruit that people throw stones. (French.)t

2272. కాని కాలమునకు పయిబట్ట పక్షులు యెత్తుకొనె పోయినవి.

In an evil time birds flew away with the cloth off his body. Alluding to the story of a Nala .--See the Nalopapakyanam Book iz.

2273. కానివాని కొంప కాచి చెరచవలెను.

One must watch and  ruin an enemy.

Wait time and place to take your revenge, for it is never done well in a hurry. {(tallau.})

2274. కాలమందుచేస్తే దేవతలకు ప్రీతి, అకాలమందు చేస్తే అసురులకు ప్రీతి ఇద్దరి వాతా మన్ను కొట్టుతాను అన్నాడట.

"If done at the right time it is plesing to the gods, if done at the wrong time it is pleasing to Asuras--I'will disappoint them both" said he. Sid by an irreligious Brahman on being asked why he neglected his daily prayers (Sandyavandanam.) The Asuras are 'demons of the first order and in perpetual hostility with the gods' (Wilson.)

2275.కాలము పోను, మాట నిలుచును

Time will go, an accusation will remain.

                      (see.Nos.1896,1999.)

2276. కాలితో నడిస్తే కాశికి పోవచ్చునేగాని, తలతో నడిస్తే తలవాకిలి అయినా దాట వచ్చునా.

If you walk on your feet you may go to Kasi, but if you walk on your head can you even pass over the threshold?

2277.కిమాలస్యం--ఆలస్య, అరసస్య, పుంగస్య, పుళియస్య, వేపస్య.

When one said " Kimalasyam?" the other replied " Alasya, Arasasya, Pungasya, Puliyasya, Vepasya."

A learned Pandit once asked, in Sanscrit, an ignorant but witty Village priest who had named an unlucky day for an auspicious ceremony "Why this delay? [in explaining the matter]" j the other replied, punning upon the word Alasya, "Banyan tree, holy fig tree, Punga tree, Tamarind tree, and Margosa tree." ( The words used are Tamil. ) The Village priest had previously to the disputation agreed with his fellow villagers that the man who spoke most words should be considered the more learned of the two; they therefore thrashed the Pandit and turned him out of their village.

2278. కుంచెడు బియ్యము గుమ్మడి కాయ. A Kuncam of raw"rice and a gourd.

                                  A modest request.

A thousand Brahmans went on an auspicious occasion to bless the king and on being asked how much rice and vegetable they would each have for their meal, replied as above. The king angry and disgusted at their greediness ordered that each should be forced, with the penalty of his life, to eat the whole quantity demanded. The Brahmans howeveT cheated the king at the suggestion of a cunning Kfimati, by distributing one Kuncam of rice and one pumpkin at a time among the whole number of men

2279. కుక్క ఆశ గుండ్రాతితొ తీరెను.

A dog's greed will be satisfied with a grinding stone.

             (For gudrayi --See No.770)

2280. కుక్కవస్తే రాయి దొరకగు, రాయి దొరికితే కుక్క రాదు. When the dog comes, a stone cannot be found; when a stone is found, the dog does not come. A thing can never be found when it is most wanted.

2282. కుక్కశ్చ పచ్చిగోడశ్చ దాటితే మళ్ళిదాటితే రెడ్డిశ్చ రెడ్డిసానిశ్చ సహమూలం విశ్యత!

If a dog crosses a wet wall and recrosses, the Reddi and his lady with all the family perish.

There was a certain stingy Reddi who paid nothing to the village priest ( Grama Purohita ). On one occasion when the Reddi was making some additions to his house a dog jumped over a freshly built wall. The village priest, who happened to be present, determined to take advantage of tbia circumstance, simulated great consternation, and repeated the above sham Mantra. The Reddi was successfully taken in, and at his expense the priest performed expiatory burnt offerings, &c. ( For the continuation of this story see No. 2261.)

2283. కుట్టితే తేలు, కుట్టకుంటే కుమ్మర పురుగు.

If it stings it is a scorpion, if it does not sting it is a mole cricket.

A man's character is known by his acts.

2284. కుడవమంటే పొడవ వస్తాడు.

When asked to dine he comes to stab. 4 (25) ఆంధ్రలొకోక్తిచంద్రికా శేషము.

2285. కుమ్మరవారింటి పెళ్ళీకూతురు ఆవకట్టుకు రాక యెక్కడికి పోతుంది.

          How can the potter's bride help coming to klin?
                        She must appear in public however bashful.

2286. కుమ్మర వీధిలో కుండలు అమ్మినట్టు.

Like selling pots in potters' street.

2287. కుళ్ళి కుళ్ళి కాయ నష్టి, కాలి కాలి కట్టెనష్టి.

By decaying and  decaying the fruit is destroyed, by burning and burning the wood is destroyed.
                 (See No.2044)

2288. కూర్చుండి తింటూవుంటే, కొండకూడా సమిసిపోతుంది.

If you sit still and eat, even a mountain will be consumed. If your spend your principal it will soon disappear, however large.

2289. కొండమీదినుంచి బండ డొర్లినట్టు.

Like rolling a boulder down a hill

                  It is easy to bowl down a hill.

2290. కొత్త అప్పుకు పోతే, పాత అప్పు పయిన పడ్డది.

When he went to raise a new loan the old debt fell upon himj. i.e. lHis creditor reminded him of the old score.

2291. కొద్ది కొద్దిగా తీస్తే, కొండ కూడా సమిసి పోతుంది.

If you take it away degrees even a mountain will be removed.

2292. కొన్నది వంకాయ, కొసరినది గుమ్మడికాయ.

What he brought was a brinjal, what he got to boot was a gourd.

2293. కొల్లేటి బ్రహ్మత్య క్రాపు మీదుగా కొట్టుకొని పోయినది.

The crime of Brahman slaying at Kolleru fell on Krapa

                        (see No.253)

Kolleru and Krapa are adjacent villages in Krishna Distgrict.

2294. కోడలు నలుపు అయితే, కులమంతా నలుపు.

If tthe daughter-in-law is black, the whole family is blackened. i.e. a bad daugthter-in-law will bring disgrace on her husband's family.

2295. కోడిని గద్ద తన్నుకొని పోయినది.

The fowl was carried of by the kitte.

2296. కోతి చావు, కోమటికి రంకు.

A monkey's death, a Komati's Adultery.

   Both are concealed from the eye of the world.

2297. కోపం పాపకారణం.

Anger is a cause of sin.

 Anger is a sworn enemy.

Anger is the fever and frcunzy of the soul.

2298. కోల ఆడితే కోతి ఆడును.

If you shake the stick the monkey will dance. 
It is the  raised stick that makes  the dog obey  (Danish)8
