Of the many 1are and invaluable works taken up foi punting. the present volume is an excellent poetreal work in Telugu entitled UDAYANODAYAMU

Udayaodayamu

"Udayamodaya nu' is the eleventh publication in the series of Andhra Pradesh Government Oriental Manuscnpts Library and Rescurch Institute This is a ve unpublished Champu Prabundle of Naran Suana, i poet belonging zo the second quarter of the sixteenth century A, D The word 'Prahandha' 18 & Synonym for 'Kavya in Sanskrit In Telugu, tevolved munnly into a changu pabandia wluch means a descriplive poem with an admixture of piose During the period of Kusinnadevaraya a numbei of such descriptive poens came out Parjatapahai ananiu by Tiomana, Manuchartiamu by Peudana, Anuktamalyada by Krishnadevaraya and a number of other works composed during the sixteenth century appear in ghttering gold in the history of Telugu literature and hence the very age is called the golden age of prabandhas Udayanodayamu of Narana Surana which has not, so far, seen the light of the clay belongs to this age and by virtue of ils poctic excellence it occupies its own place m the gallaxy of the gicat champu prabundhas

Narana Surana

Surana, son of a Niyogi Brahmin couple-Nalana and Akkamba. possibly belonged to Cuddapah district. In the colophon of the poem it was made clear that the cieum of his poetry was the benevolence of Lord Iadreswara. The temple of Indreswara ts in Chintalapotturu, UP 2 ________________

a village iti Cuddapah Distiict Further, the pation of Udayanodayamu-- namely Bhaskaramatya..was a resident of Mudiserrula or Mudiyan Agraharain, which is in Jamalaiadugu Taluk of Cuddapuh District Thus it is seen that the patios and the poet belong to the same district

The Dedication and date of the work

Available evidence points to the fact that the poet sulle cd fot want of patronage for his work It was only after the death of the poet, his son, Narana (named after his grandfather) dedicated Udayanodayamu. to Bhaskaramatya at the latter's request,

Bhaskar amatya was the counsellor and chieftain of Konday,du (Guntur District) duly appointed by Baruka a Rana Pradhani Ramu Pradhana was a great counsellor and army chieftain under the Karnataka kings He was an expert musician and also the author of 'Swaramela Kalanidhi' an authentic work on music His very title 'Bayalcara* reveals that he was a great musician

Bhaskaramatya, the patron of "Udayanodayainu was gralesul to Ramayanatya who appointed the forinei as chucaun of Konday.clu

The dates of Ramayanatya's inscriptions which range from 1539 to 1556 AD are to some oxtent helpful in deciding the date of Bhaskaramatya and Narana Suana. Since Udayanodayanıu was dedicated to Bhaskaramatya after the death of Surana, Surana must have been alive upto the date a little earlist than 1539 AD There is no evidence to show that he brought out any of his pocucal exercises during the period of Krishnadevaraya Further, Surana's poetry reveals that he was inspired by poets hike Peddana and Timana

It may, therefore, be concluded thai Surana must have composed lus works sonettoie duing the early second quarter of the sixteenth century. Sri Changaatı Seshaiah, in his "Audhra Kavitaiangını" (Vol IX-P 85) confirms this date

Vanamala Vilasanu und Udayunadayamı

Vanamalı Vilasamu is another champu piabandha wiitten by Narana Surana It must have been written by hoon earlier than Udayanodayamu A paper manuscript of Vanamalıvilasaniu which has neither atroductory nor concluding lines, but contains 446 poenis (includmg prose lanes) is now avaziable at the Andhra Sahitya Parishad of Kakinada. The Parishad got it copied from the palon-leaf manuscript
