rose to the Headship of the Department and was awarded, for his signal and faithful services by His Exalted Highness the title of Raja Bahadur.

Mr. Venkata Rama Reddy is not merely a man of broad shoulders but one of a broad mind also. The perfect affection with which he greeted his English daughter-in-law has always remained in my memory as the best and most conclusive evidence of the great and noble spirit of the Raja Bahadur.

He was not content with being a mere official, though excellence in the very difficult position he occupied would have by itself constituted merit of no ordinary degree. In his own quiet way he was the friend and adviser of every one in distress. He promoted organisations intended for the uplift of the Reddy community and may be regarded as one of the founders of the noble Reddy Residential school and Library, which is a big factor in the cultural and social life of the Reddy community in Hyderabad. The education of Telugu girls has received powerful impetus from his sympathy and organising capacity. Outside Hyderabad too, his silent influence has not been ineffective. The most astonishing features in the Raja Bahadur's life is the range of his beneficent activities and the perfect mystery in which they are shrouded. The fact is, he is not secretive but modest---modest by nature, preferring to be the power behind the throne instead of the occupant thereof. To hasty judgment he might look as a man of cold and reserved. temperament. Reserved he is, but not cold. I have not come across a
