         కాశిఁబోవ పంది గజము గాదు,

         చచ్చు గాని యీవి సాగనీ'డు;
         కల్పతరువు కింద, గచ్చ చెట్టు'న్నట్లు. వి. 7

         అల్ప - బుద్ధి వానిక'ధికారమి'చ్చిన,
         దొడ్డ వారినె'ల్లఁ దొలగ గొట్టు;
         చెప్పు దిన్న కుక్క చెరుకు తీపె'రుగునా? వి. 8

6. Though he roam to Concan, * no dog will turn into a lion; going to Benares *^[1] will make no pig an elephant ; and no pilgrimage will make a saint †^[2] of one whose nature is different.

7. If a covetous man ‡^[3] dwell near the liberal, he will die rather than endure to see his benevolence ; as the thorn bush perishes if planted near the tree of desire.§^[4]

8. If authority be given to a low minded man, he will chase away all the honourable; can a dog that gnaws shoes taste the sweetness of the sugar-cane?
