There is a flow in his works which we seek in vain in the publications of the Vernacular Literature Society. The author of Rajasekhara is at home with his theme, and has the knack of adapting his surroundings to the subject. Though he professes to follow the Vicar of Wakefield as his model, he does not, like many of the aspiring Telugu writers, blindly think that there is an intrensic virtue in retaining English names and words. On the other hand the author takes up the materials around him and works them up into harmony and shape. We did not think that the author of Vigraham which was intended to be a sequel to Chinnaya Soori's Neethichandrika could altogether cast away his old associations and take to a totally different path in Telugu Literature. We must confess, therefore, we are agreebly surprised by the appearance of the two books under review. We may well say that Rajasekhara marks an era in the annals of Telugu Literature. It is the first Telugu novel that has yet appeared, and as an attempt in a new direction, we must consider it a success. is: :k: o K. l#! We sincerely hope that Mr. Viresalingam will be long spared to his country and by his laudable efforts create an oasis in the barren desert of Telugu Literatare. We picture to oursalves a period in the history of Telligu literature when the country will look back with pride to the man who in the midst of an ignorant multitude and indifferent public, and during times when the study of the English language was at premium and Vernaculars at discount, stood alone from the English learning propensities of his countrymen, laid the foundation stone
