INTELLECTUAL GYMNASTICS.

(Reprinted from the Telugu Harp Dated 20th Sep. 1895) The week has itself signaalized by the advent here of the two famous impromptu poets Messrs. D. Tirupaty Sastry and Chellapilla Venkata Sastry of the Godavary District. On Saturday afternoon the 14th instant the upper hall of the Maharaja's College was a great center of attraction, as our learned Visitors were to give their maiden performance in Vizianagaram: The assembly was a large and representative one and included most of the elite of the town. The poets are both. very young men, evidently little above twenty. Both are simply clad and unasoring manners. As regards personal appearance, they are remarkably swarthly for Brahmins, but have pleasing intelligent faces and one of them in paticular pos- ses prominent - well developed nose that is so often the index to a clever brain. The performance on saturday was a capital proof of what these gentlemen could do in poetic line, Among the audience were many both able and willing to put them through their faces and trot them up and down the slopes of Parnasses. Twenty-five geetleman were selected to do so and right vigorously did they : perform their parts as will be seen from the miscellaneous charac. ter of the subjects they prescribed for verfification. Each wrote on a sheet of paper the subject of a stanza as well as the particnlar meteree and rhetoric required. One of the posts then began to ex: temporise the first live of a verse on each subject and after finish- ing the whole round twenty-five, was called upon to supply the nexst lines not in the order in which the first were given out; but iu a random and baphazard why which was enough to drive a per- son of ordinary intelligence crazy.
