The pronunciation of some consonants is peculiar. Thus S< cha and 23 ja are sometimes softened into 9a (or tsa, as in hot-sun, Betsy) and z or ds (as in swordsman.) The softer sounds ca and za are peculiar to Telugu, and the harder sounds cha, ja, originate in Sanscrit; no Sanscrit word can use the soft sounds.
