2279. కుక్క ఆశ గుండ్రాతితొ తీరెను.

A dog's greed will be satisfied with a grinding stone.

             (For gudrayi --See No.770)

2280. కుక్కవస్తే రాయి దొరకగు, రాయి దొరికితే కుక్క రాదు. When the dog comes, a stone cannot be found; when a stone is found, the dog does not come. A thing can never be found when it is most wanted.

2282. కుక్కశ్చ పచ్చిగోడశ్చ దాటితే మళ్ళిదాటితే రెడ్డిశ్చ రెడ్డిసానిశ్చ సహమూలం విశ్యత!

If a dog crosses a wet wall and recrosses, the Reddi and his lady with all the family perish.

There was a certain stingy Reddi who paid nothing to the village priest ( Grama Purohita ). On one occasion when the Reddi was making some additions to his house a dog jumped over a freshly built wall. The village priest, who happened to be present, determined to take advantage of tbia circumstance, simulated great consternation, and repeated the above sham Mantra. The Reddi was successfully taken in, and at his expense the priest performed expiatory burnt offerings, &c. ( For the continuation of this story see No. 2261.)

2283. కుట్టితే తేలు, కుట్టకుంటే కుమ్మర పురుగు.

If it stings it is a scorpion, if it does not sting it is a mole cricket.

A man's character is known by his acts.

2284. కుడవమంటే పొడవ వస్తాడు.
